A former quarterback who lost his marriage and his footing started taping his mouth shut with cheap tape. Four years on, Alex Neist sells beard friendly strips to more than 150,000 nightly users and says his own house is quiet again.

In March 2022, sitting in his aunt’s basement in Minnesota, Alex Neist decided to turn one better night into a company.

Neist had been a loud snorer for years. He had built a seven figure software business for sports video, then watched his marriage end and his life narrow to a basement room. He describes that time plainly. The software business doing seven figures a year, the wife and two kids, the house and cars, then within two years divorced and living in his aunt’s basement.

What changed was a book and a strip of tape. After reading James Nestor’s Breath and its account of a Stanford experiment on mouth breathing, he taped his mouth shut with cheap tape and woke feeling different. That night became a search for fabric and adhesive that would stay on through stubble and movement. Hostage Tape is now a six person company in Excelsior, Minnesota, built around that search, with mouth tape, nose strips and a loud tagline about being held hostage by poor sleep.

What others miss is how domestic the story is. The brand looks brash, with black packs and talk of an army of mouth breathers. The habit itself is small and nightly. Peel, press over closed lips, lamp off. For Luna readers who keep something on the nightstand already, this conversation is about what that small step may help, who should skip it, and how it fits into a real evening.

You say sitting in your aunt’s basement over four years ago, it all started with that one night of good sleep after cheap tape. What did that morning feel like, and what did you do the next evening.

I hit rock bottom and in that moment knew I needed to change my life. I had always been a terrible sleeper because I snored like a chainsaw. My wife had moved to another bedroom. One fight led to two, then three. Eventually, we separated. Turns out my life was being held hostage by my poor sleep. Then I read about James Nestor’s experiment at Stanford on mouth breathing versus nose breathing. That night, I taped my mouth shut with cheap tape. I woke up the next morning and something just felt different. My mouth was not dry. My head felt clearer. I cannot say it fixed everything. It was one night. But sitting in my aunt’s basement, it all started with that one night of good sleep. The next evening I did it again, and then I started asking why cheap tape peeled off by two in the morning and hurt coming off.

You link that period to divorce, selling a business for a job you hated, and weight gain. When you say you lost 25 pounds and got in amazing shape after taping, what else had changed in those months.

I mouth tape every night. That part is true now. After that first week I kept taping and I started paying attention to my nights. I went to bed closer to the same time. I drank less late. I walked more in the morning light. I lost 25 pounds and got in amazing shape across those months, and I do not say tape alone did that. Sleep made it easier to make better choices the next day, and better days made sleep a little easier. That was the moment. I knew I had to build something real, not just buy another roll of tape. My wife, kids and I are back together. She will bump me and say, honey put your tape on. Remarriage did not come from tape. It came from showing up steadier. Tape was the first steady habit I could keep.

You promise a mouth tape that actually stays on, feels comfortable, and works even with a beard, with BeardFlex hold and AirFlow mesh. What took so long to get the fabric and adhesive right.

Beards were the test. Most tape holds on clean skin and fails on stubble. It lifts at the corners when you sweat or turn. It pulls hair on removal. We tried fabric after fabric. Some breathed but stretched. Some held but felt stiff. We landed on a flexible fabric with a see through breathable mesh center, what we call AirFlow, and a stronger outer hold we call BeardFlex, with a medical grade hypoallergenic adhesive. It had to hold through movement and peel clean in the morning. Lab tested, non toxic materials mattered to me because this sits on your lips for seven to eight hours. It is still a single use strip. You peel one, press it over closed lips at bedtime, and toss it at first light. That simplicity is the point. The work was hidden in the adhesive balance.

Your site cites a three week study with SleepSpace and Dr. Dan Gartenberg reporting 78.9 percent less snoring, better sleep reported by 84.6 percent, and 45.4 percent deeper sleep. What was measured, and what do you tell people those numbers cannot prove.

I want to be careful here. That work was a three week active control study where people used our tape or did breathing exercises, and the outcomes were self reported. People reported less snoring and better sleep. The deeper sleep figure came from reports, not from lab measurement of sleep stages. I repeat it because it matches what our customers tell us, and we now hear from more than 150,000 nightly users with 51 million strips sold. But a survey is not a sleep lab. It may help some people who snore lightly because they mouth breathe. It will not help everyone, and Hostage Tape is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. If you have apnea, use CPAP, or cannot breathe well through your nose, this is not for you.

You say do not use if you have difficulty breathing through your nose, and you refuse to sell Hostage Tape as treatment for apnea. How should a reader in bed tonight decide whether to try it or leave the pack closed.

Keep it simple and kind to yourself. If your nose is blocked from a cold, allergies or a deviated septum, skip it. If you gasp, choke, or have been told you stop breathing at night, talk with a clinician and do not replace prescribed care. If you snore with your mouth open, wake with a dry mouth, and breathe fine through your nose when you close your lips now, some people try one strip for part of the evening first. Read, lamp on, see how it feels. If it feels panicky, peel it off. No score, no streak. My mission is simple. Help one million mouth breathers transform their sleep and their lives. That starts with safe use. I would rather lose a sale than have someone wear tape who should not.

She will bump me and say, honey put your tape on.

You stayed direct and off Amazon because it got flooded with cheap, low quality copies, yet a 2024 review said made in China then distributed in the USA while a bundle page says moving manufacturing to North America. Where is the tape made now, and why does that matter for quality.

Amazon got flooded with cheap, low quality copies. Instead of playing that game, Hostage Tape stays direct. We ship from US warehouses in three to five days, with free shipping over 75 dollars, and we handle returns ourselves with a 30 night money back policy. On making, both things you found are true in sequence. Early runs were made in China then distributed in the USA. As Rogan driven growth hit after our March 2024 partnership, we started moving manufacturing to North America for closer control. There was even a suit reported in February 2026 from a Toronto manufacturer over production and lost profits, which I cannot litigate here. What matters for quality is shorter feedback loops. If an adhesive batch peels early or leaves residue, a six person team can catch it faster when we are close to the line.

You launched with Joe Rogan in March 2024, added UFC co branding, Walmart.com in July 2024, and cite Troy Aikman as a user, with Modern Retail reporting a 40 million dollar projection for 2024 on all Meta ads. What did that glare change about nights at a six person company.

It changed everything and nothing. We went from packing in a quiet room to keeping up after viral nights. Seen on Joe Rogan still sits on the site because that partnership opened the door. UFC and retail interest followed. We now count more than 200,000 customers worldwide in some tallies, and the nightly number moves. But we are still six people. I answer customers. We read every return note. Paid media was almost all Meta at that time, plus a Live with Kelly and Mark spot, which is a strange mix until you realize snoring is universal. Athletes care about recovery. Partners care about quiet. The glare taught us to keep the product boring in a good way. Same strip, same routine. Lights out should not feel like a launch.

You sell pink Womens packs and a Couples Special with black and pink tape, plus nose strips worn across the bridge to open passages. Who are those versions for, and how do partners actually use them.

Snoring is a two person problem. I lived it. She moved rooms. So we made a Womens pack in pink because many women asked for a slightly different fit and look, and a Couples Special with black and pink so two people can try together without sharing a pack. The bundle with mouth tape and nose strips is for people whose noses feel tight at night. The nose strip lifts the bridge to open passages, the tape keeps lips closed. One month of mouth tape is 24.95 dollars, one month of strips is 19.95 dollars, the bundle is 39.95 dollars. A year of mouth tape is 199.99 dollars, about 55 cents a night. Use is nightly. Strips across the nose, tape over closed lips, lamp off. If one partner hates it, they stop. The goal is a quieter house, not matching strips.

Your taglines run loud, your mouth is holding you hostage and shut your mouth, while Well with Luna readers read softly between nine and eleven. What does your own evening look like now, screens and all.

I am not a perfect sleeper. I still work late at a screen. I keep my phone face down and dim the house after dinner. Warm shower. Nose strip if I feel stuffy, then tape. My wife and I talk for a bit, then lights out near the same time. I do not chase a tracker score. I notice the morning. Dry mouth or not. Clear or groggy. If I had caffeine late or a hard night, I do not double up on anything. I just repeat the routine. The long exhale for me is literal. Nose in, nose out, lips closed. The brand voice is loud because snoring is loud. The habit is quiet. That is how it fits in a real night rather than a perfect one.

Last question. If someone tries one month and feels nothing, what do you want them to keep, and what should they let go.

Keep the evening. Keep the lamp low, the phone away from your face, the same bedtime when you can. Let go of the strip without guilt. We offer 30 day returns and HSA and FSA eligibility because trying should be low risk. Tape helps mouth breathers who can breathe well through the nose. It does not teach sleep by itself. If your nose stays blocked or your partner still hears pauses, put the pack aside and get checked. I built this in a basement after losing a lot. I say held hostage because that is how it felt. If one strip gives you and the person next to you a quieter night, good. If not, the next step is care, not another gadget.

Closing note from the desk

What stays after this conversation is the smallness of the habit against the loudness of the story. A quarterback turned software founder, a basement, a remarriage, an army of users. Under it, a strip peeled at dusk and tossed at dawn.

Hostage Tape set out to help one million mouth breathers sleep with lips closed and noses open. Said plainly, some nights will feel clearer. Some will not. The honest work is knowing which nights are yours to tape, and which are for a clinician, a cooler room, or simply lights out.
