Rest starts long before lights out. Sometimes it starts with the first thing you drink, and how much of it you needed to get through the afternoon. This is a night reading of a morning product, a small green shot built after too much coffee, and what it may mean for the hour before bed.

The place is a crowded apartment kitchen in San Francisco, after the sale of a startup, with an empty pot still on the counter. {.dropcap} In 2017, after Airbnb acquired Tilt, the crowdfunding company he had built, James Beshara found himself drinking seven cups of coffee a day. The pattern finished with a heartbeat over 170 beats per minute for three weeks and a visit to the ER. For someone used to long days at a screen, the message was plain.

What followed was quiet work. Beshara gave two years to small trials of what would become Magic Mind before treating it as a company. He speaks of three launches, each fuller than the one before, and nine early months handling stock and cash flow without clear reports before hiring finance help. The result is a direct to consumer shot for mental performance sold in many countries.

Well with Luna reads this story from the evening backward. For a quiet evening read, the brand lists nootropics, adaptogens, vitamins and functional mushrooms in a proprietary blend. It describes clinically backed ingredients and steady energy across the day. It says that the aim is focus, energy and calm without jitters or crashes. We asked Beshara what sits inside, where it comes from, how it relates to coffee late in the day, and how it might fit a real night rather than a perfect one.

You present Magic Mind as a small morning shot for clear focus and steady work In your shop tonight the heart of it is Original and MAXX What lives inside that little bottle, simply said, and how should it sit beside coffee

At its most basic, it is a morning shot that joins nootropics, adaptogens, vitamins and, in MAXX, functional mushrooms. The phrases we use on site are mental performance shots, flow states and productivity, plus clinically backed ingredients. The intention we name is focus, energy and calm without jitters or crashes, and steady energy through the day.

The link to coffee is particular. Original holds some caffeine from green tea, matched with L theanine and other supporting parts. Many people still drink coffee, but a smaller amount of it, or at a later point in the morning. We also offer a caffeine free version called Magic Mind FREE for afternoons or for people who avoid caffeine. The serving is two to three ounces in all You take it in the morning, often beside or in place of a first cup. I still enjoy coffee. I simply do not want seven cups shaping my choices.

You drank seven cups of coffee daily until your heart held above 170 beats per minute for three weeks and you visited the ER What did those nights teach you about caffeine, and what did you choose to study next

I found that stronger stimulation does not create stronger work. I was leading Tilt, living on coffee, and I treated tiredness as a problem of resolve. Then my heart would not settle. Three weeks above 170 beats per minute shifts how you regard energy. The ER visit made me pose another question. Not how do I push harder, but how do I hold attention without the rise and the fall.

So I began to study coffee, caffeine and productivity. I looked into plant medicine. I spoke with people who treated attention and calm as a single system. I never planned to open a beverage company. I had hoped to mend my own mornings with a softer start. I gave two years to blending ingredients in small mixes, hoping to keep the alertness I valued from coffee and drop the jitters. That testing time is the true beginning. No name, no label, only learning what a morning might feel like if it stayed level.

You spent two years quietly tinkering before you called Magic Mind a business, then you launched three times What shifted between launch one, two and three, and when did repeat orders tell you it was ready

The first or second version does not need to reach a 60 percent repeat purchase rate, but once you are prepared to go all in, it does. That sentence has stayed with me. At first I carried a software habit. Release, learn, repair. The first launch was rough. The taste was harsher. The supply was delicate. The second was improved yet still not something people ordered again unprompted.

What shifted was care around the product and the operations. We refined the formula. We refined the stock planning. I spent the first nine months nearly in the dark on financial and inventory cash flow topics before I engaged a strong financial consultant and advisor, and that altered everything. By the third launch we held something complete enough to support. Like Airbnb, Magic Mind knew three separate launches, with each version feeling more complete When people subscribed alone, without a discount nudging them, I understood we held something ready to grow.

Seed to Capsule traces each ingredient back toward its source Your label shows a proprietary blend of nootropics, adaptogens, vitamins and functional mushrooms Can you share the growers and the country of origin for the central botanicals, and guide us from harvest to extract

I wish I could hand you a neat map naming each farm. The truthful reply is that part of our chain passes through brokers and contract manufacturers, which is common for a small beverage brand yet still hard to see through. We use suppliers who obtain botanicals like green tea, ashwagandha, bacopa and mushrooms from various regions as season and lot allow. They come in as dried material, then they are drawn into a powder or liquid concentrate before blending.

What I can name is the stage we manage most closely, which is the finished formula and the finished testing. The stage I want to open further is the farm stage. Where precisely this lot grew, when it was cut, what the extract ratio was, whether it is standardized to a marker compound. At present a customer cannot learn that from our label. To present it we would need to release lot level origin and a certificate of analysis for each central input, not only the finished shot. That is work I hope to complete. It calls for supplier agreements and another method of buying.

That quiet opacity matters deeply to our evening readers When an adaptogen powder rests inside a shot, what extraction way is used, water, alcohol or another, and what residues or fill weights should a careful buyer seek in papers

Separate botanicals call for separate methods. Some are drawn with water, some with ethanol and water, mushrooms are commonly steeped in hot water and then dried. The approach affects what remains in the powder. Water draws certain parts. Alcohol draws others. Heat and time alter yield. Our suppliers select the method per ingredient, then we mix those inputs into a liquid shot, not a dry capsule, so fill weight points to fill volume plus solids per bottle.

What should a buyer review. First, the Supplement Facts panel and the Other Ingredients line, which record amounts and excipients. Second, whether a proprietary blend states total blend weight but not single doses, which is permitted but keeps dose unclear. Third, records for solvents, microbes and heavy metals. If a brand cannot present a certificate of analysis with limits and results for a stated lot, read words like pure as advertising. I prefer to state what we test rather than ask people to trust a term.

Your shop now offers Original, MAXX, a sleep shot and soft goods like caps and tees Reports trace growth from a four million dollar run rate with one full time employee to a 100 million dollar brand with ten people How did you keep a perishable, multi ingredient shot in stock through that growth without softening specs

By holding headcount low and staying close to a few partners. I have been investing for 10 years, with each investment bringing a soft chance to refine how I do it I led Magic Mind in the same manner. Few people, defined roles, outside experts for finance and operations, and a contract manufacturer able to bottle with consistency.

The danger with a liquid of many parts is drift. One extract alters, taste moves, caffeine shifts by a few milligrams, sediment rests. We fixed specifications for Brix, pH, fill volume and sensory review, and we kept safety stock of long lead ingredients. We also learned to shape cash flow around stock, because a shot locks cash in glass, ingredients and warehouse space. Scale made us stricter on specs, not looser. If a lot missed spec, it stayed back. That is simpler to state with ten people than with two, because at last someone watches the records full time.

I spent the first nine months nearly in the dark on money and inventory cash flow until I welcomed a strong financial consultant and advisor, and that changed everything

James Beshara

You use the phrase clinically backed ingredients on pack What does that promise mean on your label, and what testing do you run lot by lot for identity, heavy metals and microbes before a batch ships

Clinically backed, in our use, points to single ingredients studied in published human research at a given dose, not to our finished shot passing a drug trial. That difference counts. Supplements are handled as food, not drugs. We name what the brand aims toward, focus, energy and calm, and what the label bears. We make no claim to treat anything.

For testing, each production run passes routine food safety checks at our contract bottler, with micro testing included, and our suppliers share specifications for identity and contaminants. We also run finished product checks for consistency. What we do not yet release is the full lot packet a careful reader hopes for, namely identity method, heavy metal findings with limits for lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury, micro findings, and caffeine assay. Despite a decade of progress in eComm, so many tender issues remain to be soothed on the subscription side Luckily, Skio is meeting this sleepy space head on I would offer the same view on supply openness. The systems are still catching up.

Taste and calm stability decide whether people keep sipping a shot What did you soften in sourcing or process to make Original gentle enough daily, and what do you still wish to refine in MAXX

Taste was the toughest early hurdle. Botanicals like bacopa and ashwagandha may turn bitter. Mushroom extracts may taste earthy. Vitamins bring their own notes. Our early versions worked yet were hard to enjoy. We adjusted sweetener proportion, acid proportion and flavor masking without aiming to make candy. We also adjusted particle size and blending order so the shot pours alike from the first bottle in a lot to the last.

MAXX brought more complexity. More actives in the same small volume invite more interaction. What I still hope to clarify is dose. A proprietary blend keeps the label recipe simple, but it leaves a careful reader unsure how much bacopa or lion’s mane sits inside. The next move is either to list more doses or to share the ranges we seek by lot. Stable energy throughout the day is our gentle phrase I want the records to support why that phrase is fair, lot after lot.

If a reader keeps one quiet shelf of goods for years and shops for a household, what should they read on your label before they subscribe, and what would help you to publish farm, extract and lab notes by lot

By lamplight, look at the Supplement Facts panel first, then the Other Ingredients line, then the caffeine line. Look at serving size, servings per container, total caffeine, and whether the box holds Original, MAXX or FREE. If caffeine troubles you, select FREE or take it earlier. If you shop for a partner or parent, review allergen and sweetener lines beside them. Keep the lot code and best by date close until the case is gone. That is how any later question finds an answer.

What would wider release require. Three parts. First, supplier contracts that demand origin, harvest date, extraction method and extract ratio for each central input. Second, an outside lab program that examines identity, caffeine, heavy metals and microbes on each lot and posts the summary by lot code. Third, a label revision to separate more doses where we can without revealing the exact recipe. To say it softly, inviting someone to subscribe to a high quality product takes a fraction of the effort it takes to sell an average or mediocre product again and again Releasing the chain forms part of quality. We have not arrived yet, but that is the shelf we hope to earn.

Closing note from the desk

What remains with us is the plain account of what cannot yet be traced. Beshara can recall the habit that began this, the two years of small trials, the three launches and the nine months without clear cash reports. He cannot yet list each grower by lot, and he admits it. That candor feels scarce in a field fond of adjectives.

Magic Mind began as a way to trade seven cups of coffee for a smaller, level morning. The coming work is paper. Share the farms, the extraction ways, the assays and the limits. Until then, read the label as printed, a proprietary blend with a clear caffeine path and a founder open to being asked about origin. For the nightstand, the lesson is gentle. Less caffeine earlier may help some people settle later, kept beside lamplight and a long exhale, with first light left to arrive on its own.
