- A broad spectrum filter cleared June 9, 2026 joins shelves August 9 at 6 percent
- Testing shows staying power in sun and steadier formulas for sensitive skin
- Wider choice may arrive by September, with one more filter still waiting
For more than two decades American sunscreen rules stayed fixed while Europe approved over 30 ultraviolet filters. That long pause ended when the Food and Drug Administration issued a proposed order on December 12, 2025, then included bemotrizinol on June 9, 2026, effective August 9, 2026.
This detail counts for lighter morning wear. Bemotrizinol shields against ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B light. In testing it keeps over 90 percent of its shielding ability after long sun exposure and may support steadier formulas with other filters such as avobenzone. With a molecular weight of 627.8 g/mol it is inclined to remain on the skin surface, and the agency observed limited passage through skin.
The Food and Drug Administration finds bemotrizinol generally recognized as safe and effective for adults and children 6 months of age and older. DSM Nutritional Products LLC asked for its addition at levels up to 6 percent. That ceiling guides recipes, because bemotrizinol is permitted at 10 percent in the EU, UK, Korea, Australia, China, Brazil and India.
Use of the filter in the European Union dates to 2000, and it has also been sold for years in Australia, parts of Asia and Latin America. Before bemotrizinol the US listed 16 active sunscreen ingredients, with two considered not generally recognized as safe and effective and rarely used. With bemotrizinol, the American total moved to 17, while the EU has cleared more than 30 UV filters.
Only two Food and Drug Administration approved ingredients supply strong UVA defense, zinc oxide and avobenzone, while makers in Europe may select from 10 ingredients that supply strong UVA defense. A study of 51 products by Environmental Working Group found only 35 percent met the EU standard while 94 percent would pass the current US standard. The EU advises UVA defense at least one-third as potent as the SPF.
Bemotrizinol became the first new active ingredient added under the streamlined process established by the CARES Act, finalized within seven months of the proposed order. DSM Firmenich spent at least 18 million dollars over more than two decades in its long push to gain approval. It holds exclusive rights to offer bemotrizinol in the US for 18 months under the name Parsol Shield, with first products expected near September 2026.
HHS Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr said Bemotrizinol has been used safely in Europe for decades, and FDA action will increase competition and consumer confidence in sunscreen products.
What remains unclear is when goods with bemotrizinol will reach broad shelves beyond the expected September start, and whether the agency will advance additional pending filters such as bisoctrizole.
Tonight the habit holds, use enough and add more in sun, while the morning shelf quietly prepares a fresh choice.
